Hey Madspin Baby

22 Mar

Dj Madspin Baby has been a devotee of electronic music since the infamous Melbourne warehouse parties of the mid-1990s.

Now firmly embedded in Byron Bay’s club scene, Madspin Baby has quickly gained a name for herself since graduating in May 2018 with a Certificate III Music Industry (Electronic Music Production) from SAE Byron Bay.

Drawing the attention of Club Raiders, Madspin Baby has been on the line up with stalwart DJs and music producers such as TAYA, Casimir, Jamie Vale and Solardo (UK).

Within her own unique mixes found on Soundcloud, Madspin Baby draws on a variety of influences including Acid House, Trax Records, Defected Records, Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May and Paul Oakenfold.

Madspin Baby is known for making audiences smile with her infectious dance tunes. She always brings the party in an inclusive and fun loving atmosphere mixing fan favourites and nostalgic classics.

Madeleine (Maddy) Spinos has always been hooked on electronic music. Attending her first warehouse party in 1994 cemented a life-long love affair of the genre for the Melbourne native.

Several years on, Maddy is now a National Course Advisor based at SAE headquarters in Byron Bay, a role in which she instantly thrived.

With electronic music still the soundtrack to her beach-side lifestyle, Maddy chanced upon four life-affirming questions:

1. Am I happy?

2. Am I grateful?

3. Do I like my job?

4. Do I feel good?

5. Do I spend enough time on my education?

Answering ‘no’ to the last question inspired her to revisit a lifelong ambition and Maddy decided to take the leap. It was at this moment the alter-ego DJ MadSpin Baby was born.

“I’ve talked about it for a while, and these four simple questions spurred me into action. I’ve always wanted to be a DJ, and to play the soundtrack of my life at my 40th birthday party!” says Maddy.

As she explored her return to study options, mentor and friend Johann Dreyer, music producer and SAE Adelaide Campus Manager, encouraged Maddy to consider music production. Maddy decided to enrol in the Certificate III Music Industry (Electronic Music Production) at SAE Byron Bay to develop a deeper understanding of sound and how to manipulate it. Learning the terminology and skills of the trade enabled her to put a personal flair to her mixing and to create a unique set.

For Maddy, the decision to undertake the Certificate III was one well made. “You can produce your own beats, upload to a streaming service and in an instant, the world is hearing your music – how amazing is that!”

The program has given Maddy the expertise required to use Ableton and each class ensures students learn about different components of the software. Feeling confident and comfortable with Ableton compliments her self-taught DJ education.

The program has not only made Maddy a better music producer and DJ, but a better Course Advisor. She has the unique ability to speak to students, as a student.

“I’m passionate about SAE not only as an employee, but as a satisfied student who belongs to the creative community on campus,” say Maddy.

DJ MadSpin Baby made her debut at the SAE National christmas party last year, getting everyone on the dance floor, which lead to her first paid gig.

Maddy says she now uses her free time creatively, productively and passionately to make music. “Undertaking the course has changed my life in ways I could only hope for; I wish I didn’t wait so long to take the leap.”

SAE Byron Bay offers Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor programs in Audio, Film, Design, Animation and Games. SECRETS OF ADULTHOOD…. According to Gretchen Ruben from THE HAPPINESS PROJECT

22 Sep

People don’t notice your mistakes as much as you think.
It’s okay to ask for help.
Most decisions don’t require extensive research.
Do good, feel good.
It’s important to be nice to everyone.
Bring a sweater.
By doing a little bit each day, you can get a lot accomplished.
Soap and water remove most stains.
Turning the computer on and off a few times often fixes the glitch.
If you can’t find something, clean up.
You can choose what you do; you can’t choose what you like to do.
Happiness doesn’t always make you feel happy.
What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while.
You don’t have to be good at everything.
If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough.
Over-the counter medicines are very effective.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
What’s fun for other people may not be fun for you – and vice versa.
People actually prefer that you buy wedding gifts off their registry.
You can’t profoundly change your children’s natures by nagging them or signing them up for classes.
No deposit, no return.

Thanks Gretchen!

I was thinking it was time my princess made an appearance on madspinbaby.

Her name is Alyki, Alice in English.  She is named after my favourite Greek actress from the 1950’s who was known for her sexpot image and comedic roles.  And how funny is my Alyki!

A mixed bag,  German Sheppard / Labrador that EVERYONE swears is a Ridgeback, with the prettiest face in the park!  We all think that of our own.

The smartest dog I know… She has a mind of her own and so well behaved.  This came with a relentless energy to train her with all my heart and the results show every time someone comments on how lovely she is.

Cheeky? Yes!  And the cheekiest with me!  Never will you see, half of the attitude she gives me.  They say your kids are your Karma, my dog is mine!

I love her with all my heart, I have never felt lonely for one day.  At times you can even see her smile, pressed lips and a grin from ear-to ear.

“BIG DOG” they say when I walk the block, “SMALL GIRL” I say back… anything next to 5ft 3” looks BIG.  However, BIG she is! At 43KG and an apatite to match, I understand what you see.

Don’t be fooled, it’s no easy feat.  She demands attention and keeps me on my feet.  I welcome our walks come rain or shine, at times too late at night my mind she keeps tight.

That look that has coined “those puppy dog eyes”, she has played that actress many times.

Who is Alice?

BMX’n with ma mate

3 Feb

Got dressed in my winters & on target Melbourne produced a deceptively warm day. Popped over to ma’ mate Pete’s place

cause I’m in the areas

& need to pick up a bump cover for the new iPhone, didn’t realise how slippery the little sucker is! Pete (PK) is a 40 year old who looks not a day older than 25 or should I say acts like that? Has a collection of BMXs that he restored to their original delight. I still don’t agree on the hard plastic seats, my arse is still sore, however, he insists on it being true to its day. PK suggests we take the bikes out. I’m quick to sort out some short sleeves for myself, by this stage Melbourne’s supposed cold day is beaming a sunshine smile. Pick out PK’s classic white RUN DMC Tee, that to my luck doesn’t fit him anymore & donates it to me. Ecstatic that finally after 34 years I now own one, we set out thrashing the streets of East St Kilda to South Yarra & back. Like a pair of bandits on the run, yet not so undercover, unknowingly we demand head turns after turns from the peeps. Took a pic for keeps…

Don’t blame it on the Sunshine

31 Jan

He just can’t control himself, documenting the things he sees.

Then there was light…

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine… Seriously, how many puns can we take from that name?!

Dean set out on a project true to his form and style from go to woe.   With great passion, determination and love for the subject of Melbourne street art,

he brings together a collection of images that were, as Dean writes

“…personally shot in awe and respect of the great work these artists produced”

and his photos DO them not only justice, but also educate visually the minds of others who share similar love for the art of graffiti.

Many times we would share stories about this “graffa” and that “new piece up around the back street of…” and “Come check out the piece in my alley-way”, that’s how we became BF’s, our shared love for the art and its artists.

Someone SNEAKED in…

27 Nov

Did someone paint the town blue last night… Adidas Original Blue

The boys at SNEAKER upped the ante and painted the day Adidas.

We were there early as expected and unexpectedly had our space reserved for us, big thumbs up for the long standing stall holders!  Thanks for looking after us Hanz

Early was the word and the theme was “First in best dressed”, the punters could have been mistaken for stall holders, we were all still setting up!

Glen out witted the Adidas crew with his classic Originals and Moi kept it fresh for the chicki babes and our regulars to the stand.  Thanks for visiting again, big MADSPIN love!

We were all kept refreshed by the lovely people at Adidas with DJ’s, free drinks and some beer from 1pm to keep the vibe going, or should I say “staying”!

The crew at SNEAKER did another sweet sweet meet!

And as always there is a signature to be signed!
